Australia has hundreds of managed IT providers — from one-person shops to national firms. Choosing the wrong one costs you more than just money: it costs your team's productivity, your business's security posture, and often many months locked into a poor-fit contract. Here's what actually separates the best from the rest.
What 'managed IT' actually means
True managed IT means proactive management — monitoring, patching, security, cloud, and support — under one fixed monthly price. What many Australian providers sell as 'managed IT' is actually a help desk subscription: you call when something breaks, they fix it and charge you. That's break-fix IT, not managed IT.
Key criteria for evaluating Australian managed IT providers
1. Australian-based engineers
Your calls should go to Australian engineers — not an offshore call centre. Ask directly: where is your service desk located? What percentage of your engineers are in Australia? A provider that hedges this answer is probably offshoring part of its support.
2. Cyber security bundled, not bolted on
The best Australian managed IT providers include Essential Eight implementation, endpoint detection and response (EDR), and 24/7 security monitoring in their base service. Providers who sell cyber security as a separate add-on are incentivised to leave you under-protected.
3. Proactive monitoring, not reactive ticketing
A good provider should catch most problems before your staff notice them. Ask any prospective provider: what percentage of issues do you find proactively vs reactively? The answer should be at least 60% proactive.
4. Transparent fixed pricing
Managed IT pricing should be a flat per-user monthly fee covering everything. Providers who quote low but exclude on-site visits, project work, or security add-ons are not offering managed IT — they're offering a low-margin entry to upsell you.
Questions to ask any Australian managed IT provider
- Where is your service desk located? Is any support offshore?
- What does your monthly price include — and what triggers additional charges?
- How many clients does each of your engineers manage?
- What is your average response time for Priority 1 issues?
- Is Essential Eight compliance included or an add-on?
- Can I speak to two or three current clients of similar size?
- What does your onboarding process look like, and how long does it take?
- What happens if I want to leave — what does offboarding look like?
Red flags to watch for
- No mention of cyber security until you ask
- Pricing that seems too low to be sustainable (under $80/user for all-inclusive)
- Long lock-in contracts (3+ years) with heavy exit penalties
- Vague answers about engineer locations or offshoring
- No dedicated account manager or quarterly business reviews
- References that sound scripted or can't be verified
